WILD WRITERS
Banff National Park
Sept 17 - 20, 2020
A writing and wilderness adventure into the portal of character.
How do we give our bodies to our stories? Whether we're writing ourselves as a character, or writing a fictional character, how do we ask the brave questions of our work, including what we want to be writing about? How might we fully give ourselves to our work?
Join writer & writing mentor Sonya Lea, author of the inspiring memoir, Wondering Who You Are, this September in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Canada. In this four-day workshop, fourteen writers will delve into the spaces where character remains unseen, difficult, conflicted, static, or evasive (even when that character is yourself.) Learn how to ask questions of your character’s blind spots, fears and fantasies, and write into lies, myths, obfuscations, secrets, changes in thinking. Together, with writing practices, solitude, nature walks, and taking risks, we allow character to be experienced.
We will share our work with the intention to listen fully, and offer holistic feedback.
The intensive will include:
daily craft talks
generative writing
silence and observation
experiences in nature
assignments to move your writing and experiment with form
examining racism, sexism and class in your characters
liminal rituals
practices to stay devoted to the work
three nights shared accommodation at the Hidden Ridge Resort in Banff
Wild Writers is open to writers of any ability, and any form. Our workshop space is accessible for disabilities. We don’t use technology like computers or phones in the workshop space, and you’re welcome to bring a laptop for your own use after class.
